Bintana Films

Bintana Films is a video art duo comprising Jonef Quintanilla-Mendoza and myself. The group has a special interest in experimental video practices. For this project, I created the group logo, business cards, social media promotional materials, and the animated intro logo.

Group Logo

The design for the logo integrates the meaning of the group’s name. Bintana, deriving from the Spanish ventana, means ‘window’ in both the Quechua (Peruvian) and Tagalog (Filipino) languages. The use of this shared word references the two founders’ respective cultural backgrounds, Peruvian and Filipino.

The repetition of black and white horizontal bars produce the image of a square window overlayed with window blinds. Peeking out of the window blinds are two eyes, referencing the two founders. The eyes also signify the nature of the group as a producer of video content —the camera, a machine resembling the human eye, is the main instrument used in videography.

Simplicity with an eye for visual metaphor is a guiding principle for the group and its design. Thus, the logo employs a restrained black and white format with basic geometric shapes to communicate a clear contextual meaning.

Finally, the style of the font used for the group’s name is consistent with the weight and character of the horizontal bars to create a cohesive and balanced logo.

Business Cards

The design for the business cards follow the group’s clean and straightforward branding. It conveys to the viewer the group’s focused approach to communication and production.

The choice to leave one side of the card unnamed is used to generate interest as to what the contents of the card may be. Once flipped, the viewer finds a cleanly placed layout featuring the group’s name on one side and the individual’s contact information on the other. The slanted black bar in the middle works as an informational divider as well as a visual pun resembling a window blinds tilt wand.

Social Media GIFs

These GIFs are intended to be published on social media platforms, primarily Instagram, for promotional purposes. They may be uploaded onto social media feeds prior to a video release to generate viewer interest. The design plays with the voyeuristic aspect of the window logo, with the unreleased video partially blocked underneath it. This acts as a literal and figurative ‘sneak peek’ to the unreleased video.

Animated Intro Logo

This animated logo is used as the intro to the group’s videos. It is placed in the beginning of the videos to inform the viewer of the group’s name as well as set the tone for the video. The clean animation of the intro logo signals to the viewer that the upcoming video is produced with clear, artistic intention.
